Leona B. Melom, 88, Minot, formerly of Velva, died Saturday, February 11, 2006, in a Minot nursing home.

Leona Bertha Emelia (Grimm) Melom was born August 2, 1917 in Bergen, ND the daughter of Rudolph and Martha (Lade) Grimm. She was raised in that area and attended school in Verendrye.

She worked in Ruthville during the war with her cousins, the Schimmelpfennings. She later worked at the LaPlaza Restaurant in downtown Minot. She met Joseph Melom and they were married October 26, 1947 in Minneapolis, MN by Joe's father, Pastor August Melom. Following their marriage they made their home in Velva where they raised their family.

Joe died on June 20, 1978. Leona continued to live in Velva until December 26, 1996, when she moved to Edgewood Vista in Minot. In September of 2001 she entered Trinity Homes in Minot.

Leona was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church, the ladies aide and the altar guild, all in Velva.

Survivors: Children, Inez (Ron) Dockendorf, Burke, SD, Eunice (Mike) Vance, Billings, MT, Thelma (James) Lehman, Hope, ND, Grace (Lynn) Watne, Velva, and Neil (Marlene) Melom, Minot; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Helen Grimm, Fergus Falls, MN, Donna Melom, Albert Lea, MN and Bernice Melom, Bloomington, MN; brother-in-law, Lloyd Johnson, Minot; uncle Reinhold "Reiny" Lade, Seattle, WA; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive.

Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; grandson, Darrel Dockendorf; parents, Rudolph and Martha, brothers, Bill, Edwin, Emil and Herb Grimm, and sister, Zelda Eiden.
