Carl Moser, age 81, of Rapid City, South Dakota, passed away Monday, August 27, 2018, with family by his side, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City.
A funeral celebration will be held Saturday, at 10am, September 1, 2018 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid City.
Visitation, with time for sharing memories and telling stories, will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 31 at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home, Rapid City.
Carl was born on September 18, 1936 to Albert and Rose (Heinrich) Moser. He married the love of his life, Leona Marshall on November 24, 1957. They spent 60 wonderful years together. They raised ten children together and have been blessed with 29 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Carl grew up on a farm in Isabel, South Dakota, with his parents and five younger siblings. The family moved to Deadwood when Carl was in high school. He graduated from Deadwood High School in 1954. His life changed when he met Leona Marshall. Carl loved to tell the story of how his charm won over the girl of his dreams (with a little help from his 1932 Model A Roadster). Carl worked many jobs in his early years, including working at a state highway station, at Wells Funeral Home, as a milk delivery man and at the city street department. He even owned his own ambulance company and also served seven years in the Army National Guard. But Carl is best known for his 28 years in law enforcement. Carl served as Chief of Police for the City of Deadwood and as Sheriff of Yankton County. He retired as the lead investigator for the Yankton Police Department in 1992. Carl’s law enforcement certificates, recognitions and awards are too numerous to list. He cared very deeply about being the best law enforcement officer he could be and was always willing to put himself in harms’ way to protect others. He was a founder of the Yankton County Search and Rescue Team. After retirement from law enforcement, Carl focused on his business, Big M Security and Alarm, and on spending as much time as possible with friends and family. Carl was a member of the Eagles Club, the Elks Club and the Masonic Temple. Carl and Leona spent their twilight years back where they grew up, in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Carl loved watching sports, especially his children and grandchildren. He loved to travel with Leona, taking the camper and boat all across South Dakota. Carl loved hunting and fishing, a passion that continues to bring great memories and experiences for the Moser family. Carl loved morning coffee and burger Wednesdays in Deadwood. He loved entertaining, whether that was in the form of his countless stories or legendary dancing. Most of all, Carl loved people and people loved Carl. He once said the three words that best describe him are outgoing, happy and perfect. He was right on all counts! He was truly a one of a kind and there will never be another one like him.
Carl is preceded in death by his parents, brother Maylon, and twin granddaughters, Theresa and Tracy. He is survived by his loving wife, Leona Moser; brothers, Ernie (Agnes) Moser and Robert Moser; sisters Shirley (William “Bill”) Enderby and Ethel Hall; his ten children; Terry (Tim) Adamson, Mike Moser and Synthia Hamilton, Kim Weberg and Kevin Gale, Kevin (Michelle) Moser, Darren (Marcy) Moser, Darla (Brad) Peterson, Cindy (Kevin) Buckman, Marsha Riley and Rick Schmidt, Brad (Stephanie) Moser and Brian (Cori) Moser; 27 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
