Robert was the youngest child of James Beattie and Margaret Gillespie.

On Jan 1, 1857 in Ryegate, VT he married Susan Lang Child, daughter of John May Child and Sally Randall.

Their children in order were William John, James Gillespie, John May Child, an infant daughter (died at 8wks), Robert Child, Susan K, Alice Blanche, Thomas R, an infant daughter (died at 3mos), and an infant daughter (premature birth).

The last daughter was stillborn on Feb 23, 1874 and his wife, Susan, died 11 days later of Lung Fever.

Robert can't be found in 1880 after his wife's death. The History of Ryegate said he left there in 1882 and went to Lancaster, but he is not found there either. His 14 yr old son Robert was living with Alexander Beattie in Lancaster who he ended up being in the lumber business with. I haven't found Robert in 1900 either. I even manually searched through every Lancaster, NH death record from 1880 thru 1920 looking for him.

I accidentally tripped across Robert in 1910 in Guildhall, VT living in the Joseph Rosebrook household. Then finally found his 1913 death certificate in Guildhall, which stated he would be buried here where two of his young children have headstones.

Robert was predeceased by wife Susan in 1874; son James Gillespie on Jul 2, 1882 St Louis, MO; son John May on Aug 15, 1862; infant daughter on Oct 5, 1863; son Thomas R. on Aug 11, 1872 (killed by train); infant daughter on Nov 1, 1871 (3mos); infant daughter on Feb 21, 1874 (stillborn - premie).

He was survived by sons William John and Robert Child. His daughters Susan K and Alice Blanche, according to the History of Ryegate, graduated in Salem, MA Normal School and became teachers; with Blanche listed as teaching in Duluth. I can find no records on them yet beyond the 1870 census.
