Rutherford was the son of Peter Jefferson Beets (1833-1908) who was born in Highland County, Ohio and died in Adair County, Missouri; and Margaret Ann (Trowbridge) Beets (1843-1920) who was born in Kentucky and died in Adair County, Missouri.
Rutherford had the following siblings, only two of whom lived to adulthood:

Both Rutherford and his two brothers graduated from Dr. Andrew Taylor Still's American School of Osteopathy (A.S.O.) in Kirksville, Missouri, and became Osteopathic doctors. Rutherford set up his practice in Bethany, Harrison County, Missouri.
Rutherford's first wife was Pearl Aberdeen Turner (1879-1928). They had one daughter:

Rutherford's second wife was much younger than him, Lois Gail Bain, born in 1906.
