Submitted by Donald Ervin Ellis, great great nephew of Peter Jefferson Beets, a brother of my great grandfather Andrew Jackson Beets.

Peter was a Civil War veteran, Co. H, 50th Regiment, Missouri Militia.

Peter was the son of Samuel Beets, Sr. (1814-1867) who was born in Virginia and died in Missouri; and Rebecca Jane "Betsy" (Dawson) Beets (1815- ) who was born in Ohio.

Peter's father came from Virginia to Ohio where he married Peter's mother in 1831. The family remained in Ohio through the birth of 7 children, including Peter. Then they moved in 1848 to Jefferson County, Iowa. Three more children were born in Iowa. Peter's siblings were:

Sarah Elizabeth Beets 1832 – 1915
Lucinda Beets 1840 – 1872
Andrew Jackson Beets 1841 – 1914
Cassy A. Beets 1844 –
Jonathan A. Beets 1847 – 1908
Joseph Beets 1848 –
Malinda Beets 1850 –
Mary G. Beets 1853 –
Samuel Jr. Beets 1855 –

Around the early 1860s, the family moved to Missouri. On April 20, 1862, Peter married Margaret Ann Trowbridge in Kirksville, Adair County, Missouri. In August of that same year, Peter enrolled in the Missouri Militia to fight in the Civil War. A few days later he transferred to the U. S. Army and served 2 years, 9 months, and 20 days.

Peter and Margaret had 5 known children, but only three survived:

Daughter Beets
Son Beets
Dr. Merrit J. Beets, D. O. 1864 –
Dr. John Christmas, Beets, D. O. 1868 – 1939
Dr. Rutherford Hayes, Beets, D. O. 1876 – 1957

All three Beets sons graduated from Dr. Andrew Taylor Still's American School of Osteopathy in Kirksville, Missouri and became Osteopathic Doctors.

Peter died in 1908 and Margaret in 1920. Both are buried at Ownbey Cemetery where several other relatives are buried.
