He served in the U.S. Army for 12 years and the Alaska Army National Guard for 13 years, retiring in 1992. A.J. was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War. A.J. served as an enforcement and appeals officer for Alaska Child Support Services for more than 20 years.
In 2001, A.J. pursued a hobby in winemaking, producing and sharing hundreds of extraordinary wines over 17 years. In 2003,he began winning awards at the winemaking competition at the Alaska State Fair. On Sept. 3, 2018, his wines won 29 awards.
A.J. was extremely passionate about genealogy and thoroughly enjoyed spending endless hours researching and sharing information about the McRae, Rawls and Phillips family. One of his greatest accomplishments was hosting his final family reunion for 700 family members in Vidalia in August, 2018. he also enjoyed catching the big fish in Alaska and Mexico.
A.J. is survived by his wife, son, 2 daughters, and his 4 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and loving grandmother, Inez Phillips.
Friends are invited to join us on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, at Legacy Funeral Home - Heritage Chapel at Angelus, 440 East Klatt Road, Anchorage, AK 99515.
