Howard worked in the coal mines in Kentucky as a young man. During WW II he served in the Marine Corps. Upon discharge from his military service he moved his family to Northern California and made their home in Montague. A millwright by profession, he helpd build Pine Mountain Lumber Co., and stayed there until it was dismantled and he retired. After his children had grown, he relocated to Yreka where he lived until his passing. Howard was preceded in death by his wife Ethel of 50 years in 1985. --Obituary, Siskiyou Daily News, Yreka, CA
