The son of William & Anna (Galebough) Diffenderfer or Diffendarfer, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted September 5, 1864, mustered into federal service at Camp Dennison, Ohio, October 6 as a corporal with Co. E, 181st Ohio Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 14, 1865.

On or about July 13, 1916, he hanged himself from a tree in the woods not far from his home. His son found the body probably on July 15. His obituary in the New Oxford Item hypothesized that "the excessive heat" had led him to take his life, The York Daily was probably more on point when it stated, based on the coroner's report, that Diffendarfer had been "despondent and in poor health . . . and the condition of his mind was not good.
