Fred Callahan, 94, passed away May 28, 2016 at the Owsley County Health Care Center in Booneville, KY. Born on March 29th, 1922 in Owsley County to Albert and Mary Gabbard Callahan. Fred was a graduate of Owsley County High School and the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture. He served as a waist gunner on a B-17 in the US Army Air Force from 1942 – 1945 during World War II. He was a life-long resident of Booneville and a member of the Cow Creek Presbyterian Church. He started his teaching and coaching career at Owsley County High School. During this time he met and married Louise Campbell Callahan. He left his teaching career to start his 29 year career in banking and became employed by Farmers State Bank in Booneville. During his lifetime he served on the Jackson Energy Board for 54 years, KY Association of Electric Coop for 35 years, Middle KY Community Action board for 54 years. He was the longest standing member of the Booneville Lions Club with over 50 years of membership, Booneville Housing Development, Owsley Co. Soil Conservation Board. Fres was devoted and loving family man who loved his wife and daughters dearly. He was a “second father” to Beverly and John K. Turner and “pa” to a very special little boy, Noah Shouse. He was also a devoted fan of his beloved Kentucky Wildcat Basketball team whose games he attended for over 40 years. He was a man who loved his family and his community and will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched. He is survived by his loving wife, Louise Campbell Callahan, 2 daughters; Rosemary Callahan and Kimberly Callahan of Booneville, KY, several nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Michelle and his parents Albert and Mary, 7 brothers: Charlie Brown, Seber, Ed, Jeff, Steve and Lester Jr. and 3 sisters: Katherine McQueen, Louise Callahan and Emily O’Connor. Funeral services were held at the Booneville Presbyterian Church May 31st with the Rev. Terry Sandlin, Rev. Jamie Brunk and Rev. David Combs officiating. Burial was in the Campbell Cemetery with Searcy & Strong in charge of arrangements. Booneville Sentinel 06/08/2016.
