Mr. Benke was born June 15, 1913 in Sheboygan, son of Frederick and Emilie Schaldonat Benke.
He graduated from Sheboygan High School, and served with the United States Army in Europe during World War II.
Mr. Benke and the former Janice Holler were married on November 16, 1946 in Sheboygan. The couple lived in Sheboygan until 1953, when they moved to Kiel, where Mr. Benke owned and operated Benke’s Meat Market from 1953 to 1968. He then operated the Benke A. & W. Root Beer stand until 1975, after which he was employed by Lake to Lake Diary until retirement in 1978.
Mr. Benke was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Kiel and a past trustee of the church.
He was a secretary of the Kiel Men’s Golf League, a former Kiel alderman and past president of the Kiel Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Julie) Weill of Green Bay; one grandchild; one brother, Adolph of Sheboygan; and two sisters, Mrs. Meta Voss of Sheboygan; and Mrs. Carolyn Tauferner of Fredericksburg, Texas. One sister preceded him in death.
The funeral was Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kiel. The Rev. Richard Warnke, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Lutheran Cemetery in Sheboygan.
