UNION, WV --- Helen Hall Guy, 85, of Union, WV died November 3, 2016. Born September 22, 1931 in Gary, WV, she was the daughter of the late John Allen Hall and Margaret Katherine McCormick Hall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. George Henry Guy (d. 2003), and three brothers, Harry Allen Hall (d. 1925); James “Jim” Allen Hall (d. 1983); and Jack Lee Hall (d. 2013). She graduated from Waiteville High School in 1949 and continued her education in secretarial courses, telephone operator services, and LPN training. She served as a clerk for Wilson & Company in Norfolk, VA in 1949 and then for the Celanese Corporation of America in Narrows, VA. She worked as an Accounting Cost Clerk from 1951-55, while her husband served at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas. She and her husband moved to Charlottesville, VA, where she worked as a Clerk for the Department of Health Education & Welfare while he completed medical school. After his graduation and residency, they chose to return to Monroe County to raise their family. In 1962, she started working part time as a receptionist at Guy’s Clinic in Union and later worked as the office manager after her five children were all in school. After Dr. Guy’s retirement, Helen worked as an Admissions Coordinator for Jefferson Place in Sweet Springs, WV, traveling all over southern WV. She thoroughly enjoyed her final employment with Kmart in Lewisburg, WV where she stayed until heath issues led to her retirement. Throughout her life, she was very active in the community serving as a Cub Scout Leader and 4-H Club Leader, 4-H Camp Counselor, and later with the Monroe County 4-H Association Board of Directors. She was an advocate for education in the County, serving on the Monroe County Citizens for Better Schools (1968-69), the Sweet Springs Community Center board (1966-1971) and as Secretary of the local chapter of the American Association of Retarded Children (1971), the Monroe Day Care Association Board of Directors, and the Union Band Boosters where she served in various capacities, including manager for the Union Band Boosters Concession stand at the WV State Fair long after her children had graduated. She enjoyed working in her garden and tending her many flowers and plants. She also loved to cook and enjoyed the company of her dogs as well as the well-fed birds in her yard. She is survived by three daughters, Dr. Lyn G. Guy, of Union, WV; Kay G. Kostura and husband Tim of Roanoke, VA; and Joy L. Guy and wife Monnie L. Griggs of Durham, NC.; as well as two sons, Gary D. Guy, of Union, WV and William G. Guy, of Union, WV. Additionally, she is survived by seven grandchildren, Christina (Mike) Salazar, Master Sergeant David (Michelle) Guy, Ash (Jean) Guy, Kathryn Kostura (Robert) Thompson, Dr. Margaret Guy, Alex Kostura, and McKenzie Kostura as well as two nieces and three nephews. Helen also was especially proud of her great grandson, Henry George Thompson. The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 5, 2016 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Groves Funeral Home in Union, WV. Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Groves Funeral Home in Union, WV with the Reverend Frank Naglic officiating. Burial will follow in the New Zion Church Cemetery in Waiteville, WV. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made either to the Monroe County Education Foundation, Inc. at P. O. Box 90, Union, WV 24983 to support scholarships for those that wish to pursue health related careers or to the Monroe County 4-H Foundation Inc. PO Box 238, Union, WV 24983.
