BIOGRAPHY

Kenneth Jack Fletcher was born in Sugarland, Texas. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. V.J. Fletcher. He was known by his middle name of "Jack" to his family and friends. He was raised all over West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. His father was employed by Humble Oil and Refining (now Exxon) and the family moved often with Mr. Fletcher's transfers. The family lived in Penwell and Kenneth attended Odessa schools, also lived in Hobbs, New Mexico, Andrews and finally Denver City. While in high school, Jack was actively involved in the band, played junior varsity football, basketball and ran track. He was the Vice President of the annual staff, was on the school newspaper, participated in the junior play and was Senior Class Treasurer. He graduated in 1959 from Denver City High School.

After high school he enrolled at Sul Ross State University in Alpine and pursued a degree in Business Administration with a minor in Education. His parents had moved to Monahans while Kenneth was a student at Sul Ross and Jack would spend his summers in Monahans working in the area doing summer jobs. While at Sul Ross, he was a member of the rodeo team. He completed the requirements for his BBA degree in 1963 and took a teaching job in Eagle Pass, Texas and was residing in Quemado, a small community near Eagle Pass. He taught business administration classes at Eagle Pass High School and coached the junior high track team. He loved animals and dabbled in rodeo and was a member of the Rodeo Cowboy's Association, he entered many events, as a competitor. He wanted to purchase land and ranch as well as continue to teach school.

He was drafted at age 25 and he entered the Army in San Antonio, Texas on June 23, 1966 after the 65-66 school year. He completed basic and AIT training in infantry at Fort Polk, Louisana and began his tour in Vietnam on December 12, 1966. He was a assigned as an infantryman with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was killed on February 6, 1967. The family was informed that his APC hit a land mine, but military records shows that faulty wiring inside of the APC set off ordinance that was being carried inside. This explosion killed all that was aboard.

PFC Kenneth Jack Fletcher was buried with full military honors in Monahans, Texas. He was awarded a posthumous Bronze Star Medal and the Vietnam Military Merit Medal.
