Age 86, died early Saturday, September 8, 2018, at the Fair Oaks personal care home in Pittsburgh. An architect, he was president of the firm Reid & Stuhldreher. Hired in 1962, when the company was Alfred D. Reid Associates, he became a partner five years later. The firm was reorganized as Reid & Stuhldreher in 1984 and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1988. Notable projects Stuhldreher designed include St. Sebastian Church in Pittsburgh's North Hills; St. Raphael Chapel at St. John Vianney Seminary in Miami; the Allegheny Valley Senior School; and the Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, as well as numerous hospital projects throughout western Pennsylvania. He stepped down in 1995, maintaining a part-time role until 1997. He was a longtime member of the Civic Light Opera board. Born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, he was the second of four sons of Harry A. Stuhldreher, quarterback of the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame, and Mary McEnery Stuhldreher. Raised in Bryn Mawr and Madison, Wisconsin, he earned bachelor's and master's degrees (1953 and 1958) in architecture from Yale University. Stuhldreher set several NCAA freshman records as a Yale swimmer and was part of four consecutive undefeated teams that earned two national titles. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953 to 1955 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. He coached Marine football and swim teams, earning divisional and Atlantic Fleet championships, respectively. He and his partner, Carol Totten, enjoyed an active retirement. The couple built a substantial collection of Native American, African and Asian art, much of which they donated to the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, forming its first permanent collection. Stuhldreher crossed paths with some notable figures. The summer after his high school graduation, he worked as an advance man for Gypsy Rose Lee's burlesque troupe, and he enjoyed recounting his meetings in the 1950s with Albert Einstein, Bing Crosby, Katharine Hepburn and Broadway producer Harold Prince. He is survived by his partner, Carol Totten, of Pittsburgh; a son, Tim, of Lancaster, PA; and a brother, John, of Sonoma, CA. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry Jr. and Peter; and a daughter, Julia. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 20, at St. Sebastian Church, 311 Siebert Road. A reception and lunch will follow at Grant Bar & Restaurant, 114 Grant Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fair Oaks Cares, 2200 W.
