Geraldine (Crano) Cahill died peacefully and surrounded by loving family on November 14, 2018 in Westerville, Ohio at the age of 91. She is survived by her sister Eleanor (Louis) Lore; her children Paul Cahill, David Cahill, and Monica McJunkin; their spouses Beth Cahill, Adelaide Aime and Kevin McJunkin; grandchildren, Diana Cahill, Alexander Cahill, Adam (Michaela) McJunkin, Thomas McJunkin, Colleen Cahill, and Mitchell Cahill; and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and family friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Cahill, parents Nick and Anna (Fabrizio) Crano, and brother and sister-in-law John and Dorothy Crano.  Gerry’s family thanks the staff and residents of Parkside Village for the love they showed her.

Gerry was born May 4, 1927 in Akron, Ohio and attended St. Martha elementary school and Akron North High School, graduating as the valedictorian of the class of 1945. She earned a B.A. in music education and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Akron in 1949.  She played the organ at St. Martha and St. Anthony churches between 1951 and 1958.  After college, she worked at the main branch of the Akron Public Library from 1949 to 1958 and earned a master’s degree in library science from Kent State in 1951. Her thesis was “Public Library Service to Small Business”.

Gerry met the love of her life in 1957 at a Catholic singles group that met at St. Bernard Catholic Church in downtown Akron, Ohio.  They married in 1958 at St. Martha Church.

After taking time away from work to raise her family, Gerry restarted her career at the Akron Public Library in 1968. At the time of her retirement in 1987, she was the leader of the information division. She enjoyed this aspect of library work because the information division was the first contact with patrons when they entered the library.

Colleagues remember Gerry as the consummate librarian: In her work at the library she was always laser-focused on the customer, with a relentless work ethic and engaging approach that provided a role model for countless library co-workers.  The positive ripple effects of Gerry's work continued for decades after she retired from library service.

She enjoyed being active in church, attending music performances, reading, and cooking for family. She enjoyed traveling with Walter, and visiting with her children and grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Hennessy Funeral Home, 552 N. Main St., Akron, on Friday, November 30 from 4 to 7 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, December 1, at 10 a.m. at Blessed Trinity Church, 300 E. Tallmadge Ave., Akron, with Rev. Joseph Warner officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, with a reception to follow at the Sheraton Suites in Cuyahoga Falls.
