The Ipswich Journal - Saturday 21 January 1854, p 4:
The remains of our respected townsman, Mr. Adam Maitland, whose death is recorded in our obituary, were yesterday consigned to their final resting place. The deceased gentleman was for many years connected with the firm of Messrs. Ransomes and Sims as their commercial representative, and to testify the esteem in which he was deservedly held in the establishment, nearly a hundred of the clerks and workmen attended the funeral. About eighty of the men preceded the corpse, headed by one of the managers. These were followed by Mr. Chas. Hammond, surgeon, and the Rev. Mr. Cavell. The corpse was carried to St. Margaret's church by six of the senior workmen, the pall being supported by six of the principal clerks of the establishment. Among the mourners we observed Mr. Allen Ransome, Mr. Robt. Chas. Ransome, Mr. Biddell and Mr. Geard. The deceased gentleman lived in the esteem of all with whom he was associated, and his memory will be long cherished by a large circle of friends.
