Joan Maness Newman Hill, 72, passed away peacefully from natural causes and complications associated with pancreatic cancer on December 13, 2018 in the comfort of her long-time Axtell home. She was born on September 30, 1946, to Robert Maness and Elise Bailey. She attended South High School in Salt Lake City where she resided with her grandmother, Alice Morrey Bailey and developed skills in art, music, and a playwright's talent for entertaining. Joan had many accomplishments throughout her life, one most notable was having a large family of boys with her former husband George Brent Newman.
Joan lived in her Axtell home for 46 years. The last 25 of those years were with her second husband, Tim Hill, with whom she helped raise his three children. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where she served and fulfilled numerous callings throughout her life. She worked for the Utah Department of Corrections from 1991 until her retirement in 2010. Joan was always youthful and energetic, even completing Police Officer Standard Training in 1999 at the age of 53 and achieving several other certifications in Criminal Justice and Social Work. Once retired, she stayed very active with Tim competing in antique car shows, skydiving, and taking vacations with numerous family and friends. She also found great joy spending time with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Joan is survived by her husband, Tim; sons: Robert Newman, GA; Ronald Newman, Salina; Russell (Irina) Newman, CA; Ryan (Jody) Newman, Elk Ridge; Raymond (Tia) Newman, ID; and Randon Newman, Riverton; stepchildren: Rick (Mary) Stewart, Roosevelt; Brooke (Brett) Robbins, Kaysville; Allen Hill, Aurora; 30 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren; siblings: John Collins, WA; Lauralee Bass, Riverton; Charles Collins, NV. She is preceded in death by her parents, and stepson, Kevin Hill.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Axtell LDS Ward Chapel located at 75 West Center Street, Axtell, where friends may call on Thursday, evening from 6:00-8:00 pm and Friday morning from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Axtell Cemetery.
