Robert sailed to Australia in the Glentanner and arrived in Port Phillip on 27 September 1853. He spent two years in Melbourne, then moved to Ballarat where he spent the rest of his life. He was the father of two daughters and three sons.
Robert was a van driver but also a well-respected Sunday School teacher with the Wesleyan Church for nearly fifty years and a large celebratory concert was held for him on his retirement.
Robert died in 1913. His funeral was attended by hundreds of people and he was buried in the old Ballarat Cemetery with his daughter Maryanne who died in June 1882.
