THREE PIONEERS CALLED

Mr. Jeremy Griggs of Danville and Mrs. Lucy Emerson of Medo.

The pioneers, those who early settled this section are fast passing on, very few of the real early settlers remaining. This week we are called upon to chronicle the demise of three of these pioneers in the persons of "Uncle" Jerry Griggs of Danville, Mrs. Lucy Emerson of Medo and Mrs. Ellen Slater, formerly of Vernon.

For a year past Mr. Jerry Griggs has been in rather poor health but always with an optimistic view of life he held on when others thought he could not possibly survive and when about again he would invariably plan on matters for the future with the intention of enjoying life. While a man along in years he was a boy in spirit and drove a motorcycle long after his seventy-fifth anniversary. No one enjoyed getting out into the open more and long trips would be taken in this way.

Jeremy Griggs was born in Sutton, Province of Quebec, Canada, August 25th, 1835, and had thus passed his 81st birthday. He was of rugged Dutch stock, his ancestors back two generations having come from Holland. His boyhood days were spent in Canada where he attended to the United States, locating at Waupon, Wisconsin, where he was married on April 15, 1860, to Miss Ruth Squires and four years later came to Blue Earth county, locating in Danville township where he continued to make his home until the final summons last Friday morning. Here his active mind and body carved out a place in the community and his service were soon asked for as a local school director and as a member of the town board. In every place his rugged honesty and sincerity of purpose won for him the respect of his associates and neighbors. He was a student of public questions and a great reader, ever evidencing an interest in matters of importance to his country of his community.

Just two years ago the wife who had been his companion over half a century passed away. It was a sever loss and his death occurred within one day of the anniversary of the demise of Mrs. Griggs.

The deceased is survived by four sons and three daughters, all grown to man and womanhood, namely Mrs. Thomas Howieson of Mapleton; Hiram Griggs of Wayne, Nebraska; Wm. Griggs of Nassau, Minnesota; Walter Griggs of Minnesota Lake; Mrs. William Denison, of Amboy, and Chauncy Griggs who resides on the old home farm.

The funeral was held Sunday from the Congregational church and was largely attended by old friends and neighbors, Rev. Edmond Larke preached an able funeral discourse. Interment was in Union cemetery. A good man has gone to rest.
