The daughter of Joseph Brindley, Mary was a native of Derbyshire, England where her father worked as a Butcher. She was 23, residing on Gordon Street in the parish of St, Alkmund, her “rank or profession” stipulated as “Service,” when she married 25-year-old Thomas Greaves, a Butcher, also residing on Gordon St., at the parish church on Nov. 23, 1852.

The couple immigrated to the United States, arriving in May 1853 aboard the ship Windermere and settled in Boston where all nine of their children were born, including Thomas J. in 1853; Isabella Anna in 1855; Mary L. in 1857; Alice in 1859; Charles S. in 1861; Minnie, born and died in 1863; Hiram, born and died in 1864; Ida Jane, born in 1866 and died in 1868; and William A., born in 1869.

The family resided in South Boston, the North End, and finally on Mossland St. in Somerville, where her husband died in 1904. Mary followed her husband to a grave at Cambridge Cemetery by a year, also dying on Mossland St. at age 75 years, 11 months, and 25 days due to Odema of the lungs and Chronic Nephritis.
