Tenor saxophonist, Ammons was the son of boogie-woogie pianist Albert Ammons and played with Dizzy Gillespie, Charle Parker and Miles Davis. In 1952 Ammons organized his own band, the Gene Ammons Quintet. On a darker side, Ammons had recurring bouts with heroin addition and had served two terms in Statesville, IL prison. Ammons died while be treated for pneumonia.
