Television Journalist. He is remembered for his tenure as news anchorman on the TV program "Good Morning America" from the show's inception in 1975 until 1986. Initially, interested in playing football until an ankle injury ended his dream, he started his lengthy association with broadcasting, during his years at Central College in Iowa, when he landed a job on radio in his native Oskaloosa. He attained a degree in History and following graduation, he went on to Ames, Iowa, where he worked in radio and later television. Bell enrolled at the Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, and during this period he was taught by acclaimed journalist Curtis MacDougall. He graduated with a Masters Degree in Journalism and worked in Chicago and Omaha, before being hired by ABC in New York City. Bell served as an international correspondent and became noted for his coverage of the Vietnam War. In the United States, he served as a national correspondent and covered such stories as Martin Luther King, Jr's, assassination and funeral (1968) and was on site when Robert Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles during his presidential campaign (1968). During the early 1970s, Bell returned to Southeast Asia and covered the Vietnam War's expansion into Cambodia. He served as White House correspondent during the Watergate era, into the Ford Administration, and was on the first broadcast of ABC's "Good Morning America" which debuted on November 3, 1975. He remained as regular anchorman until he took a position as anchorman at KYW-TV Channel 3 in Philadelphia. After retiring from television, Bell served as a professor of Journalism at Ball State University from 1992 until his retirement in 2007.
