Miss Reines died in the infamous Triangle Factory fire in Manhattan, considered the worst factory fire in New York history. It claimed the lives of 146 workers, mostly poor jewish immigrants who came to this country seeking a better life. 20 female victims and 2 men are buried in this cemetery. The site of the factory, at 29 Washington Pl., is now home to N.Y. University science classrooms. The fire began on the 8th floor and men tried to douse the rapidly spreading flames. A hose they found was not connected. Many escaped down stairwells and packed elevators. For the women on the 9th floor there was no hope. After discovering locked doors at two stairwells, many chose the the only other way to escape the flames-jumping to the street below. Nets held by firefighters could not handle the weight of several jumpers at once, and fire ladders were too short to reach the 9th floor. The legacy of the fire was that many workplace and fire safety laws were enacted.
