The birth date for Agnes given on her stone is wrong. Agnes was the youngest daughter of Tom and Margaret White Ruffin of Como, Mississippi. Her mother died when she was less than a year old, and her father died when she was three. The 1880 Census has her in the home of her father's brother, William Ruffin, a schoolteacher who lived in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi. She was aged 4 at the time of that enumeration. The 1900 census gives her birth year as 1876. When Agnes' father, Tom, died in Como in 1878, he left a will which names her as his last child because each of the others is listed in order of birth with her name last. Tom and Maggie's eldest child, Sallie, was born in 1865 and the child just "above" Agnes is Robert whose birth year was 1872. Agnes' mother died in August, 1876. This leads to the conclusion that Agnes' birthdate must be November 8, 1875 if the birth month and date are to be trusted on the headstone.
Agnes married Edward Lindsey in 1898 and in 1900 they had their only child, Margaret Agnes Lindsey born in Tate County, Mississippi where the couple was residing at the time of the census for that year.
