The 1880 Census has her in the home of her father's brother, William Ruffin, a schoolteacher who lived in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi. She was aged 4 at the time of that enumeration. The 1900 census gives her birth year as 1876. When Agnes' father, Tom, died in Como in 1878, he left a will which names her as his last child because each of the others is listed in order of birth with her name last. Tom and Maggie's eldest child, Sallie, was born in 1865 and the child just "above" Agnes is Robert whose birth year was 1872. Agnes' mother died in August, 1876. This leads to the conclusion that Agnes' birthdate must be November 8, 1875 if the birth month and date are to be trusted on the headstone.
