Until his retirement, Mr. Bates was a skilled painter and wallpaper contractor.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Mrs. Viola Buchanan Bates; four daughters, Mrs. Mozelle Jones, Mrs. Georgia Jones, Mrs Bessie L. Durham and Miss Dorothy Bates all of Columbia, SC; eight sons, Wilbert Buchanan, Marion Bates, Jr., William, Franklin Jerry, Robert L., Henry, George and Sherman Bates of Columbia, SC; an adopted son, Marion Bates, III, of Columbia; one brother-in-law, Mr. Samuel Robertson; twenty nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sons-in-law; five daughters-in-law; and many friends, all of whom join with the family in sharing the grief caused by his departure.
