Mrs. Barry was born on the family farm in Guilford on Dec. 14, 1906, the oldest of 13 children and the daughter of Cyrus and Eva (Cook) Merrifield.
She was raised and educated in Guilford and was a graduate of Brattleboro High School, Class of 1924. Mrs. Barry went on to attend the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, where she received her registered nursing degree.
Mrs. Barry was employed for many years at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, working as supervisor in the operating room and later in the emergency department.
She was a member of Centre Congregational Church in Brattleboro, held membership in the former Dennis Rebekah Lodge No. 1 in Brattleboro, and was a member of the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association.
Of her pastimes and interests, she enjoyed sewing and both vegetable and flower gardening. She was also an avid reader of mysteries.
To her credit, at age 79, she learned how to drive a car and received her Vermont driver's license and drove up until August 2005.
She was married to Guy Barry on June 23, 1930. Her husband of 47 years predeceased her in 1977.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Cyrus Merrifield, Jr., Stephen Merrifield, Joseph Merrifield and Cecil Merrifield; and five sisters, Thersle Merrifield, Joyce Merrifield, Edith Tilden, Ruth Howe and Barbara Barrows.
