Francis "Frank" H. Merrifield, 94, of 3 Mill Road, Richmond, died Dec. 20, 2007, at Genesis Keene Center after a period of failing health. He was born in West Guilford, Vt., March 29, 1913, son of Cyrus and Eva (Cook) Merrifield, and had lived in northern Connecticut. Mr. Merrifield later moved to Chesterfield, Rockville, Conn., and then back to Chesterfield prior to moving to Richmond in 1947. He retired from the C.L. Lane Co. after 20 years where he was an expert at sawing wood. When he first went to work, he was a farmer and logger using a crosscut saw. He knew exactly where to fell a tree and was an expert at having the tree fall exactly where it was supposed to go. In his earlier years, he owned several Clydesdale horses and he took great enjoyment out of driving and training them. Mr. Merrifield was an extremely hard-working man who stayed to himself and did what he needed to do to take care of his family, which he loved very much. When it came time to take care of his property, he was a perfectionist, especially with his yard work. He continued to love gardening and even into his 80s he still split his own wood, and could be found up on his roof in the winter shoveling snow. Mr. Merrifield enjoyed whittling with wood, and enjoyed his friends. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Velma (Davidson) Merrifield of Richmond, whom he married June 29, 1938; three sons, Lawrence Merrifield and his wife, Marlene, of Harrisville, Alfred Merrifield and his wife, Laura, of Sullivan, and Jerald Merrifield and his wife, Susan, of Richmond; two daughters, Frances Davis and her husband, Bernard, and Louise Roberts and her husband, Darryl, all of Keene; a brother, Kenneth Merrifield of Winchester; a sister, Jeanine Saunders of Fitchburg, Mass.; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. His brothers, Joseph Merrifield, Cyrus Merrifield, Morris Merrifield and Cecil Merrifield, and his sisters, Ida Berry, Thurcile Merrifield, Edith Tilden, Ruth Howe, Barbara Barrows and Joyce Merrifield, all died earlier.
