Summit High School will host the Feb. 11 service
NewWest (Missoula, MT) - Tuesday, January 23, 2007
Three family members with direct links to Bend - who were the only U.S. citizens on an Indonesian jetliner that vanished New Year's Day and apparently crashed - will be honored with a memorial service Feb. 11 at Summit High School. The service will take place at 11 a.m. in the school's auditorium.

Stephanie Jackson, 21, and Lindsey Jackson, 18, both University of Oregon students who grew up in Bend, and their father, Scott Jackson, 54, who lives part-time here, were all aboard a flight that is believed to have crashed into a sea near Indonesia. The plane, carrying 102 passengers, was engulfed in a ferocious storm and eventually went down. The aircraft has still not been recovered in whole. All those onboard are presumed dead.

Initially, authorities thought the plane might have crashed in mountainous jungle terrain on one of the Indonesian islands. In recent weeks, however, parts of the plane - including seat trays, portions of the tail and wings, fiberglass and pieces of the wheels - started washing up on the shore on the western side of an area known as Sulawesi. No bodies have been found amongst the wreckage.

Indonesian authorities, with the assistance of U.S. officials, now believe the plane could be at a depth of as much as 6,000 feet.

Scott Jackson, who lived part time in Indonesia working as a furniture company executive, was traveling with his daughters, who had come to visit for the holidays.

Summit High School is providing the auditorium at the request of family members of Stephanie and Lindsey for the Feb. 11 service, according to Lynn Baker, the school's principal.

"It's always hard to lose a daughter and a member of the Summit community," Baker said. "Our hearts are with the family."
