He received a student-pilot certificate in 1941 at the age of 17 and, following high school, enlisted in the US Navy, going on to serve 32 years before retiring with the rank of Captain. He served in the Pacific Theatre in WWII after completing Naval Flight Training. He received a BS degree in Military Science from the University of Maryland, and a Master’s degree in Administration from George Washington University. He also studied aerial photography in preparation for aerial reconnaissance and was an air-intelligence officer in the Sixth Fleet under Admiral George Anderson. In 1962 he became commanding officer of VP-44 Squadron based in Patuxent River, MD. In 1963, he became Chief Briefing Officer to the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon. Following his military service, in 1974 he worked at White Engineering in the anti-submarine warfare division. He also was a lecturer for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Air Safety Foundation, and operated a flight school and aerial photography business, “Aviair”. He served several years as the President of the Aviation Association, and maintained both his pilot and flight instructor licenses until the age of 90.
He was predeceased by his parents, Harrison Serrell and Jeanne Mina D'Metre Serrell; an infant brother, Theodore Serrell; his wife of 71 years, Beverly Ann Francis Serrell; and a brother, Philip Serrell. He was survived by two sons and their spouses; two daughters; a son-in-law; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation and funeral services were held on Saturday, January, 27,2018 at St Paul's Episcopal Church, Berlin, MD. Interment for him and his wife on February 28, 2019.
