Amanda Louisa Jane "Lou" Extine was born in February 1867 in Jackson County, North Carolina. Only her surname has been found, not her parents. Her birth date/year differed widely in the documents (i.e. the 1900 census lists it as February 1867, whereas her obituary lists her as 84, and her North Carolina death certificate lists her age as 74). She was married to William Isaac Ashe (1871-1950) on 17 April 1898 in Sylva, NC. They had several children. She died on 4 March 1947 in Scotts Creek, NC at the age of 80. She was interred in the Ashe family cemetery.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. LOU ASHE
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 5, 1947 for Mrs. Lou Ashe, 84, at her home at Balsam. Rev. Ben Cook officiated.
She is survived by her husband, William Ashe; seven sons, Thad of Webster, Ham and Eula of Sylva, Manuel, Marion and Horace of Balsam, and Frank of Asheville; one daughter, Mrs. Ola Henry of Waynesville; 37 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased. Garrett Funeral Home had charge of funeral arrangements.
