John Chaffee, b. July 12, 1796, Clarendon, Vermont. d. June 16, 1883, Berkshire, Franklin, Vermont. He was the son of Comfort Chaffee and Lucy Stow. He married Dec. 4, 1817, Priscilla Danforth, widow of his brother Comfort Chaffee, Jr.
John was a farmer and bought land from his father on Sept. 14, 1820, Nov. 5, 1822, and August 26, 1826, the last of these purchases including the home farm of his father. He also succeeded his father as tavern-keeper. John and his wife, Priscilla, cared for his father, Comfort and mother, Lucy, in their later years. When John was a small boy, he put out his eye with a pen-knife.
