Jasper Chaffee, b. Oct. 4, 1789, Rutland, Vermont. d. July 9, 1867, Berkshire, Franklin, Vermont. He was the son of Comfort Chaffee and Lucy Stow. He married Nov. 4, 1810 at Berkshire, Vt. 1) Hannah Burelson. B. July 17, 1790 Pownal, Vermont. d. August 21, 1854, Berkshire, Vermont. She was the daughter of John Burelson "of Providence, R.I.". He married April 28, 1856, at Enosburg, Vermont 2) Clara H. Tracy (no further information).
Jasper was a farmer who bought land from his father, Comfort Chaffee on Nov. 7, 1810, which was later sold to his brother, Reuben.
"There is a tradition that on the day when one of Jasper's children were born a party of Indians, returning from a trip into Vermont, stopped at this house and demanded food. This was set before them, and these Indians ate all the cooked food in the house. When they started on their journey, the Indians lined up at the boundary, and fired a salute. This frightened the family very much for a time, but it proved to be a custom of the Indians when they passed the boundary, the imaginary line being held in a kind of reverence by them."
He later became a big land owner, his most valuable farm property was called "the Yaw farms" on the Pike River between West Berkshire and Berkshire Center. His farms were worth an estimated $20,000.00. Later in life, he was the leading merchant of Berkshire for many years, and did a large business for a country village.
