From The Salem Press, Salem, New York February 25, 1926
Martin Hanks
Martin Hanks, a well known and respected resident of Salem, died suddenly Sunday at his home on Main street in this village after being ill but a few hours with heart trouble. Funeral services were held at the United Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. A.T. Hemphill officiating. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. Hanks, who was a son of Harvey and Sarah Brown* Hanks, was born at the Hanks homestead near Cossayuna on November 7, 1848. In 1874 he married Miss Florence A. Cook. They resided on a farm near here for many years and after retiring from active farming about fifteen years ago, moved to Salem village, where they have since lived. He is survived by his wife and three sons, Marshall, who lives on the home place, Willard of Cambridge, and Warren of Salem, and by two sisters, the Misses Frances and Harriet Hanks of Greenwich, and by two brothers, Harvey Hanks, whose home is in Australia, and Stewart Hanks of Cossayuna.
Mr. Hanks has always been interested in the affairs of the town and could always tell just when any important event occurred, no matter how many years had intervened. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church of this village and was held in high esteem in the community.
