My dear cousin, John C. "Patches" Mitchell, 63, of Auburn died peacefully Friday, June 8, 2007 unexpectedly at home after a long battle with cancer. John is survived by a son, Robert J. Mitchell and his wife Nancy of Webster, one brother Kenneth Mitchell and his wife Deborah of Milford Ct. and two grandsons, Robert Jr. and Joshua whom he loved very much, and several nieces. He was predeceased by a brother James.

John was born in Aberdeen, Washington son of the late John L. Mitchell and Ruth V. (Sinkus) Mitchell and came to live in Auburn as a child. He attended Auburn High School, and served in the U. S. Navy on the Battleship U. S. S. Vesole, which was the lead ship during the Cuban missile crisis. John worked for several area companies for many years before he retired due to illness. He was a long time Harley Davidson enthusiast and loved working on all types of motorcycles.

John was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, The Combat Veterans Association, and was also a director for the Vietnam Veterans for the Community Association, as well as being a board member of the Veterans Outreach Center in Marlborough. He was a member of the VFW Posts in Milford, and Millbury and was the State Representative for the Combat Veterans Motorcyle Association. He was a confidante to many of the local Veterans with whom he visited with over the years.

He was my cousin, the son of my mother's brother and was known as "Chuckie" to us. Chuckie was very strong, brave and determined in whatever he put his mind to. Although we lost touch through the years, he was always loved and will never be forgotten.

John's funeral was held Wednesday, June 13, at 9:00 A.M.in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME AND CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Calling hours were held from 5-8 P.M.on Tuesday, June 12. Burial with Military Honors was in the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 11 Glenallen St., Winchendon, MA. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Vietnam Veterans' For The Community, P O Box 886, 1102 Pleasant St. Worcester, MA 01602.

I heard many heart filled stories about all the good that Chuckie did when he was able and can't stress enough, how very proud I am of him. He helped many, many people through the years. May his legacy live on through the work that he has done and the friends and family that he has left behind.

Godspeed, dear cousin.

Love,

Susan
