Helen was the daughter of Patrick John Kelley and Levicia Virginia "Ginger" Baldwin. Helen's mother died in 1908 when Helen was 8 years old. Helen's niece, Patricia Kelley Henderson, remembered that Helen was sent to a Catholic boarding school to live because her father Patrick didn't know how to raise a girl.
