William Ira Kennedy was born in Warren Twp., Tuscarawas Co., OH and is a son of William R. Kennedy. He was raised on his father's farm, and obtained his education first in the commons schools and afterward in the Hagerstown Academy. He married Pamelia (Amelia) Harriett Leggett on Feb. 11, 1865 in Tuscarawas Co., OH. When Pamelia Harriett and William Ira married, they lived in Carroll Co., OH for three years then they settled on a farm in Fairfield Twp., Tuscarawas Co., OH. They acquired an excellent farm of 245 acres of well-improved land. They were members of the Presbyterian Church at New Cumberland, Tuscarawas Co., OH and in politics, he was a Democrat. They had seven children: Olive Matilda, James Barton, Frank Audley, Joshua "Laird", Clifton Ira, Roy Villars and Jane Margaret.
