Born Jan. 31, 1911, in Nicastro, Italy, son of the late Francesco and Antoinette Longo Gigliotti, he entered Carbondale public schools in 1916, having arrived from Italy and speaking no Eng. lish. He went on to attain a bachelor of arts degree from St. Thomas College, now the University of Scranton, and a master's degree from Bucknell University.
In January 1937, he became an English teacher at Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale. He later served as both high school assistant principal and as the district's assistant superintendent of schools. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Carbondale, and for many years was a member of its church choir.
Surviving are two sons, Peter Jr., Orlando, Fla.; and Joseph, Scranton; two daughters, Marie Gillette, State College; and Elaine Gillette, with whom he resided; a brother, Michael Gillette, Archbald; three sisters, Teresa Potis, Carbondale; Jenny Saurino, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Helen Defazio, Carbondale; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Paul; a brother, Anthony Gigliotti; and a sister, Mary Borys.
