Allen J. Gibson, 91, passed away peacefully in the arms of his wife on Saturday, July 28, 2018 after a brief illness. Allen was born in Bellaire, Ohio on August 16, 1926, to Maddie L. (Ogden) and Johnson Gibson.

After graduation from Steubenville High School in 1944, he continued his education at The University of Steubenville, where he obtained his Bachelor of Science. He later earned his Master of Science from The University of Syracuse. Allen was employed as a science and math teacher for 33 years. He served at Keystone High School from 1960-1972 and Elyria City Schools from 1973-1993, before retiring in 1993. He enjoyed teaching and was loved by his students. Allen enjoyed wood working, reading and spending time with family and friends. He was best known for his sense of humor, love of conversation and willingness to help others.

The Lord called Allen to the ministry at a young age. He began as Assistant Pastor to his father, Johnson Gibson. He later served as Interim Pastor at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Elyria, Bethany Baptist Church in Elyria and Second Baptist Church in Elyria, until becoming the Senior Pastor at Grace Community Church, Lorain for 15 years.

he leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 38 years, Joyce (nee Shores); children, Tanya (Tim) Harris of Indiana, Jerome (Angela) of Indiana, Dwayne Clark of Lorain, Allen Jr. of Indiana; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and siblings, Ruth Johnson, Flora Young, Helen Jeter and Juanita Taylor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnson and Madie; son, Aaron Gibson; brothers, James Gibson, Daniel Gibson and Richmond Gibson and sisters, Nellah Margaret Jones and Clara Mae Gibson.

Calling hours will be held at The Cathedral of Praise Worship and Family Center, 4545 Elyria Avenue, Lorain on Friday, August 3, 2018 from 5 to 8 P.M. and Saturday, August 4, 2018 from 9 to 10 A.M. The celebration of life will take place immediately following the Saturday viewing at 10 A.M. Bishop Laurence Nevels and Eulogist, Pastor Tanya Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.
