1871 Korean Campaign Medal of Honor Recipient. Served as a Private in the United States Marine Corps on board the "USS Alaska". He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the attack on and capture of the Korean forts, on June 11, 1871. His citation reads "Braving the enemy fire, Purvis was the first to scale the walls of the fort and capture the flag of the Korean forces". His Medal was issued on February 8, 1872. Private Purvis was one of 15 United States sailors and marines to be awarded the Medal of Honor for this little known American military action.
