Martha was called 'Price.' She was the youngest known child of Sarah Ann "Sallie" Adams and John Gan (their eldest was born May 1, 1836). Her first husband was George Clark. After his death, she married "Jack" Abner Houston Hill. (Information taken from--May Cox History)
Martha was 15 when she wed Jack Abner Houston Hill. Jack and Martha's children were Mary, John Abner, and Martha Ann. Jack was at first a Confederate Rebel, then a Yankee soldier in the Civil War. Her first child, Mary, died at birth. Price died at the birth of her third child, Martha Ann, who survived.
"Price married George Clark and they made their home in Smith Hollow. He soon died of tuberculosis. Then she married Abner Houston 'Jack' Hill. The first child died at birth. It weighted 15 pounds. Then she bore John Abner, who never married. Martha Ann [daughter] was born and Price died at her birth. The family and the doctor went into the other room to eat breakfast and when they came back, Price had hemorrhaged to death.
The baby was raised by [her grandmother] Sallie Ann for several years until Jack Hill married again. Martha recalls the day her father came to take her to her new home. Her grandmother Sallie Ann stood in the dooryard and cried, '"I'll never see you again." And it was true."
