Son, 13, Finds Parents Dead; Murder-Suicide Is Suspected

A married couple, who neighbors said kept mostly to themselves, were found shot to death in their mobile home Thursday afternoon by their 13-year-old son when he returned from school.

Charles Jack, 57, and Darlene Jack, 37, residents of the Shadow Lakes Village Mobile Home Park, 2738 N. Military Trail, west of West Palm Beach, were found shot in the head at about 3:30 p.m. Police said they had been dead no more than 1 1/2 hours.

Mr. Jack, who neighbors said sold insurance, was found in the hallway of the trailer and Mrs. Jack, who worked at Fish Tales restaurant in Lantana, was found about 15 feet away in the dining room.

Police found a .38-caliber Special near the bodies and there was speculation that the incident was a homicide-suicide.

"We don't think it was foul play," said Palm Beach Sheriff's Detective Paul Colombo. He said there were no signs of a struggle.

"They weren't necessarily despondent, but maybe having domestic problems,: he added.

Neighbors said the couple, who lived in the park for about eight years, were generally quiet and didn't appear to be upset when they spoke to them just a few hours before they were found.

"My husband knocked on the door about one o'clock to borrow something and [Charles] was fine then, he was in good spirits," said Jeanne Hart, 62, who lives next door. "So God knows what happened. They were the two most unlikely people.

"They were hard-working people, sober people," she added.

"They pretty much stayed to themselves," Mrs. Hart said. "As far as I know, I've never heard them raise their voices. They never got excited, their voices never got emotional.:

Police said their 13-year-old son came home from school and found his parents. A 10-year-old daughter was on her way home when the boy went out and sent her to a neighbor's home.

Both children were to stay with family friends last night.

Neighbors said the couple put their mobile home up for sale about a month ago. They said many residents in the park were doing the same because the developer who ones the park wants to sell the lots.

"Chad came to my house about 10 days ago and said, "I think we're going to have to move because we can't afford to buy the lot,'" said Sally Schwartz, 67, who lives a block away. "The other little boy with him said, 'I don't want him to move because I won't have anyone to play with.'"

"There's no explanation," said Mrs. Hart. "I can't give you any explanation. My husband and I just can't believe it."
