Maryann Morano, age 97, a longtime resident of Greenwich, CT died Saturday evening June 22, 2013 in Stamford with the family who adored her by her side.
Born in New Canaan, CT July 7, 1915 she was the daughter of the late James and Frances Vietri Lato. Maryann was the wife of the late Peter R. Morano.
Mrs. Morano, who died the revered matriarch of three generations, led her family from an early age as the oldest daughter of 9 children. She was remarked by all who knew her for an unmatched wit and humor, which she first sharpened serving her neighbors at the New Canaan general store owned and operated by her mother.
Mrs. Morano was also a proud graduate of New Canaan High School, where she earned a varsity letter in Women's Basketball, an award for "Women's Athlete of the Year", a State Championship title, and an invitation to play for the University of Connecticut. She declined her scholarship to continue working in the Great Depression climate of 1934.
She married Peter Morano in 1940 and moved to Greenwich, where they owned and operated a dry-cleaning business on Greenwich Avenue for decades and were active members of the St. Roch Church. When Mr. Morano's brother,, Albert P. Morano, ran for Congress in Connecticut's 4th District, Mrs. Morano deftly organized political support to help him win a record election in 1950, and reelection for three consecutive terms.
Mrs. Morano stayed in business after being widowed in 1979, and was active in Greenwich into old age. She will be remembered by all for her relentless work ethic, boundless energy, and sincere dedication to family and friends.
She counted as one of her lifelong dreams seeing each of her grandchildren graduate from New Canaan High School and continue to finish college, the youngest graduating this spring.
Maryann is survived by her son Albert and his wife Sandra of New Canaan
A daughter, Linda R. Morano of Greenwich, CT, a sister Edith Sinclair of Norwalk, CT and grandchildren, Christopher, Peter John, and Sara Ann.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 10:00 AM at St Aloysius Church, New Canaan, Interment will be in St Mary's Cemetery, Greenwich, CT
