Wabasha County Herald; Nov. 16, 1905

Once more the angel of death has called and a pioneer has responded to the summons and laid down life's burdens and is at rest in St. Felix Cemetery, there to await the bugle call on resurrection morn. This time it is Mrs. Johanna Jost, beloved wife of Alois Jost of the town of Pepin. For the last few years deceased had been in feeble health. All that a kind husband and medical skill could do for her was done and often has she been snatched from what seemed the yawning mouth of death, and nursed back to health. With each recurrence of the malady she was less able to ward off the attack and on Friday morning early she passed suddenly into the land beyond the the grave. Her husband had sat with her throughout the night and before the rising of the morning sun her spirit had flown and she had gone to claim her reward leaving the faithful husband, the companion of her joys and sorrows to continue life's journey alone.

Deceased's maiden name was Johanna Brown. She was born in Newfoundland on Aug. 12, 1841. She came to Wabasha in 1855 and in 1856 was untied in marriage to Thomas Murphy who died in 1876. On Nov. 25, 1882 she was united in marriage to Alois Jost. This union was blessed with happiness and prosperity. She had two sisters, the late Mrs. Thomas Malone and the late Mrs. O'Shea. She never had any children of her own but was a mother to the motherless. She brought up to manhood two boys, Michael and Patrick Carroll, now of Leadville, and in later years Peter Marx, another homeless boy, was the object of her deepest solicitude and motherly care. She was throughout her whole life a faithful Christian woman and as she lived she died, fortified by every consolation that religion gives. The bereaved husband is left to plod on alone through life's pathway, has the sympthy of all the friends of the family. The Herald has for him but words tender and sympathizing and can only comfort him in the words, "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away."
