Allie Mae Abercrombie Kelley, 89, of Waynesville died unexpectedly Wednesday evening at Haywood Regional Medical Center. Born in Six Mile, SC, she was the daughter of the late William Harrison Abercrombie and Nellie Power Abercrombie. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Donaldson Kelley (2012) and a son Richard Dale Kelley (2009).

A 1945 graduate of Pickens County High School, she lived in various locations in Pickens County until 1948. She worked in the office at Haywood County Hospital from 1967 to 1979 and was a former Assistant Manager of the Family Dollar Store in Waynesville. However, most of her life was dedicated to raising and taking care of her family to which she was entirely devoted.

On August 28, 1948 she married the love of her life, J.D., in Pickens, SC. Thus, began a 63-year romance that will endure forever. She and JD enjoyed camping, bluegrass concerts and traveling to visit children and grandchildren. But most of all they enjoyed spending time with each other.

She enjoyed crocheting and crossword puzzles and would sit patiently working on both. She was a wonderful homemaker, canning, sewing and cooking for her family. She had been a member of First Baptist Church in Waynesville since her marriage. There she helped lead in children’s programs and was a long time WMU member.

She was a remarkable wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and was known for her sweet disposition and kindness to others.

She is survived by her children, Reba Miller (Ron) of Raleigh, N.C., James Donaldson “Don” Kelley, Jr. of Akron, OH, and Dr. William Terry Kelley (Christine) of Waynesville; her grandchildren, Amy Miller Cave of Raleigh, William “Will” David Miller (Julie) of Cary, James Richard “Jim” Kelley of Carrollton, GA, and Crystal Kelley Ashler (Harrison) of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., and her great-grandchildren, Logan and Ayden Cave of Raleigh, Tate, Quinn and Leo Miller of Cary, Christopher Kelley of Athens, GA, Tristen Kelley of Carrollton, GA, and Jacob and Isaac Ashler of Santa Rosa Beach, FL.

She is also survived by a sister, Betty Abercrombie of Hendersonville and a brother James Lewis of Florence, SC. as well as brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Kay Kelley and Jack and Vivian Kelley of Waynesville, and Winifred Abercrombie of Seneca, S.C.; nephews Ed Kelley of Waynesville, Phil Kelley of Mars Hill, Harrison Abercrombie of Walhalla, S.C., John Abercrombie of Conway, S.C., Edward Abercrombie of Madison, Tenn., nieces Mary Jo Reece of Canton, Shirley Franklin of Morganton, Emily Nelson of Waynesville, and Ginger Waters of Inman, S.C., as well as several great-nephews and nieces. She will also be missed by dear friends Julie Rhinehart and Betty Ross. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Sunday at Garrett Funeral Home. Friends may call on the family at the residence at other times. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of Garrett Funeral Home with Reverend Mike Leslie and Reverend Jeff Norris officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesville. Pallbearers will be Mike Franklin, Butch Franklin, Ed Kelley, Phil Kelley, Ron Miller and Shannon Rhinehart.
