Francis Ellis was married to Annie Earp DuPuy in Philadelphia on Feb 13, 1873. They immediately moved to Selma, Alabama where he worked for the railroad and, according to family lore, was a "carpet bagger" who lived in a house surrounded by high fences and they let the dogs out every night as a safety precaution. His wife died in 1888 (in Boston, from pneumonia) and so he sent his teenage daughter to live with his aunts in Elkton, MD. He continued to move around a lot, working primarily for the railroads, but finally settled in Philadelphia. He never remarried. His fortunes rose and fell a lot as he was a gambler and loved horses. He purchased expensive furniture when he was feeling flush and relied on his brother, Rudulph, for help when he was down in his luck. He finally came back into his daughter's life shortly before he died. He died a few days after prostate surgery due to complications.

A theory about how Annie and Francis met - Annie's brother was the President of the Virginia Railroad. Francis worked for this railroad so perhaps that is how they met. Francis' father, Francis Asbury Ellis was a prominent citizen (and a lawyer) in Elkton, MD.

There is some confusion about the birth date of his daughter Clive. She has records of 1874 and 1873. Clive herself near the end of her long life said that her birth year was 1873. It is possible that Annie DuPuy was pregnant when she married Francis in Feb 1873 and they immediately left for Alabama where there was no family. The Ellis family lived in Elkton, MD and the DuPuys lived in Philadelphia. So there might have been some deception surrounding the June 8 birth of Clive.
