Mary Barton (nee Young) was born on May 6, 1926 in Ridgewood, Queens to Andrew Young and Helen Fernis. Her childhood years were spent in Ridgewood, Queens where she lived with her parents and her sister Helen. She later moved to Park Slope, Brooklyn where she met and married her husband Donald Barton in 1946. In 1956 they purchased their home in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn where together they raised their five children, Donald, Gerald, Marianne, John and Michael.

Mary was a part time secretary and full time homemaker who enjoyed yoga, gardening, reading and especially spending summer vacations in Vermont with her family and visiting her sister Helen and brother-n-law George, who raised six children of their own. She was happy when she was sewing, knitting or baking her children’s favorite Toll House cookies. Mary also cherished the time spent with her brother-n-law Jack and his wife Doris that often included a trip to Atlantic City now and again. She was always there with a sympathetic ear, a kind word and a smile when you needed one most. One of her favorite memories was her 90th birthday party when all of her family and extended family joined with her to celebrate.

Mary was predeceased by her husband Donald, sons Donald George (Catherine) Gerald Thomas (Stephanie) and sister Helen Barton (George). Mary and her husband Donald were married for 48 years. She is survived by her children Marianne (Gerry), John (Flore) and Michael (Maria). Proud grandmother of Christopher, Stacy, Brian, DJ, Kevin, David, Laura, Patrick, John, Eoin, Colin, Lauren and Kiera; she was thought of as “grandma” by their spouses as well. She adored being great-grandmother of Gannon, Emma, Sam, Mary, Aidan, Annabelle, Iason, MacKenzie, Kean, Abigail and another great-granddaughter on the way in September 2019.

She will be missed by her nieces and nephews as well as her many grandnieces and grandnephews who also thought of her as “grandmother.” She outlived the relatives and close friends of her generation, which earned her the title of “matriarch” by her children and grandchildren alike.
