Frances was the daughter of Levin Layfield and Lucretia Peacock. She came from a large family and had eleven siblings. Frances first appears in census records in 1850 as a four year old in Marion County, Georgia.

She married James Curtis on May 12, 1864 in Taylor County, Georgia. They were married 59 years when James died on November 15, 1923. He was 78 years old.

The 1910 Houston County, Ga. census shows the couple had ten children and nine children still living. Their children are: Mary, Ruffin, Newton, Leila, James, Magoura, Nettie, John, and Joseph.

On April 5, 1930, Frances is recorded in the census and living with her daughter Nettie Curtis Lingo and granddaughter Daisy. She passed away nearly three months later on June 30, 1930 at the age of 84 in Macon, Georgia. While her grave is not included in the Find A Grave listing for Fort Hill Cemetery, the death certificate states she is buried there.
