Back in 1927 the old north/south road (which is now U.S. Route 41 - it was a different number then), needed to be replaced, but the powers then didn't want to disrupt the traffic, so they opted to build a new road (the current US 41) parallel to the old road, but to the west of it. Everything went just fine until they got to the Stone Bluff area and encountered this cemetery. The head of the work crew didn't want to detour around the cemetery, so they just bulldozed all of the stones into a big pile back off the right-of-way and went on with their paving. We got this story from several of the old-timers of the area, and some of the folks even picked up some of the stones and used them as stepping stones in their yards and gardens in Stone Bluff. As one of the Fountain County Cemetery Commissioners, our group heard of this travesty and sought out the landowner and she allowed us to copy her abstract which clearly lists the area of land set aside as a cemetery - so we have proven that there was one there. Next we set out to find the actual area, which we were able to do through dowsing, and to clear the area. This has been a 4 or 5 year process, but this, on August 9th, 2014, at 2 p.m. we will be re-dedicating this cemetery. It is now fenced off, and has a memorial. Unfortunately we do not know very many names of those buried there, although through dowsing, I personally, found over 200 burials. This is the place I would say is most like the burial place of your James Abbott - but, of course, I have no way to prove that.

James Abbott was the Justice of the Peace. James Abbott and his wife, Rebecca (Barnum) Abbott arrived there around 1825. He bought 80 acres in 1825, but died in 1827. While we know the fate of the children, most leaving the county within 10 years, what happen to Rebecca is unknown, Rebecca remarried, to a ? Rowley. This cemetery was located on the SE corner of James Abbott's farm.

James Abbott's father was James Abbot of Ridgefield, Fairfield, CT (~1754 - 1840). His mother was Catherine Woods of Ridgefield, CT (1763-1793). Son, Edwin Craig Abbott (1814 - 1856).
