Alcester (SD) Union newspaper, Oct. 5, 1944, Page 1, Col. 6: "DEATH SUMMONS PIONEER WOMAN SATURDAY, SEPT. 30 Was Nearly 92 Years of Age; Came to This Locality in Covered Wagon In 1873; Funeral Oct. 4

"Mrs. Henrietta Johannsen, mother of Mrs. Peter Weidenfeller, and one of the oldest, if not the oldest woman in Union county, passed away Saturday morning, September 30, at eight o'clock, at her home in Alcester. At the time of her death she had reached the prime old age of 91 years, 6 months and 28 days. During her life she has always enjoyed good health, even up until the time of her passing.

"Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, October 4, at the Ross funeral home in Hawarden, and burial was made in Peace Lutheran cemetery south of Alcester. Rev. E. C. Beyer was in charge of the services.

"Mrs. Henrietta Draves Rosenow Johannsen was born March 2, 1853, in Hofstad, Germany. In 1866, at the age of 13, she came with her parents to the U. S., settled at Rosendale, Wisconsin. Seven years later, in 1873, the family came in a covered wagon to Union county, Dakota Territory, and now South Dakota, settling on what is known as the old Draves homestead two miles south and one mile west of Alcester.

"In 1872 she was married to William Frederick Rosenow, and to this union were born a son, Edward, and a daughter, Hannah, now Mrs. Peter Weidenfeller. The husband and son both passed away in 1878.

"The deceased lived as a widow and farmed the homestead for five years, and in August, 1883, she married Hans Henry Johannsen. They lived on the old Johannsen farm until 1915, when the family went to California, where they lived for 14 months.

"Upon their return from California they went to Hawarden, Iowa, where they lived until 1919. They then returned to the Johannsen farm, and in March, 1919, the husband passed away. Mrs. Johannsen lived there for a year, and then went to California to spend the winter. One son, Arthur Martin, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Johannsen, and he passed away March 18, 1936.

"Upon the return of Mrs. Johannsen from California, she came to Alcester where she has made her home until her death on September 30.

"The only two known living survivors are her daughter, Mrs. Hannah Weidenfeller, and a brother, A. H. Draves, both living in Alcester."
