Argentine Statesman. He served as the President of Argentina from December 10, 1999 to December 21, 2001. He attended the National University of Cordoba and earned his law degree at the age of 21. In 1963, he became an advisor to Interior Minister Juan Palmero. He was elected senator in March of 1973 under the UCR (Radical Civic Union) party. Later that same year, he was the running-mate of presidential candidate Ricardo Balbin during a unsuccessful run for the presidency. In 1976, he was removed from the Senate during the military coup on March 24th of that year. After the military dictatorship ended in 1983, he was again elected to the Senate and served until 1989. Two years later, he was elected as a deputy and then, in 1993, returned to the Senate. He later served as mayor of Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. In 1999, he was elected president of Argentina and served in this post for two years before a banking panic and riots forced him to resign in December of 2001. He retired from political life after his resignation and later faced several legal problems. He passed away of heart and kidney failure.
