Orris Leland Aldrich, 89, of Baxter, formerly of Brooklyn Park, Verndale and Cambridge passed away on Friday, November 2, 2012 at Bethany Good Samaritan Home in Baxter.

He was born on February 11, 1923 in Little Sauk, Minnesota to Charles and Mabel (Johnson) Aldrich. He grew up in Verndale, attended grade school and graduated from Verndale High School in 1941. After high school Orris moved to California and worked at an airplane factory for a little more than a year.

In 1943 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and flew 35 missions as a flight engineer on at B-24 Bomber. He was stationed in Manduria, Italy and served with the 450th Bomb Group, 15th Air Force. He was Honorably Discharged in 1945. Following his discharge he went back to California to work on the railroad for a short time before moving back to Verndale. Orris received the French Medal of Honor in 2010.

On June 15, 1950 he was united in marriage to Connie Klucas in Wadena and resided in Verndale. In 1956 they moved to Brooklyn Park. Orris worked for Northern States Power. In 1957 he became the first Fire Chief of the Brooklyn Park Fire Department and served with the department until 1969. Orris, Connie and their six children moved to Cambridge in April 1969 when they purchased the R & I Drive In. In 1973 they started Cambridge Appliance and Repair. Connie passed away in June 1989.

Orris retired in 1992 and married Mary Peterson. They lived in Wadena until Mary passed away in 1994. He married to Marjorie Rowe Wallsmith in 2000 and they resided in Baxter.

Orris was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed deer hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister Doris, wives Connie and Mary, sister Neola McConnell. Orris is survived by his wife Marge of Baxter, six children Jackie (Carmen) Frarck of Cambridge, Kathy (Steve) VanDeest of North St. Paul, Rick (Sue) Aldrich of Cambridge, Jane (Steve) Cahoon of Cambridge, Larry (Sherry) Aldrich of Cambridge, Charles (Denyse) Aldrich of Chaska, ten grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, sister Merlyn Bissell of Verndale, brother Myron (Lois) Aldrich of Owatonna, as well as numerous step children and their families, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
